Destan, Mehmet Emin (b. 1888, Istanbul-d. 1976) Novelist and short story writer. After graduating from Galatasaray Lycee. Destan studied law at Istanbul University but never completed his studies. He started writing for newspapers in 1908 and published his first novel. Bahar (Spring), in 1912. In the following years he published a number of novels and short stories. Mainly concerning the life of the lower classes in Istanbul. His later works include Şehir Kızı (The City Girl, 1933). Yoksulluktan Üstün Zenginlik (Superior Poverty from Poverty, 1935). Bir Kadının Hatıraları (Memoirs of a Woman, 1942), and Son Göç (The Last Migration, 1953). Destan was also a playwright. This best-known plays are Hacivat Karagöz’ün Oynadığı Oyunlar (The Plays Hacivat Karagöz Played, 1937). And Bir Gece Müşterileri (One Night Customers, 1972).

This is bad for an economy as it leads to less consumption and investment and can cause debtors to default as debts fixed nominal amounts while income decreases.
