Medieval times source of wonderful stories
Sourcebook: Pope Gregory VII on the Power of the Pope. 1073 Pope Gregory VII (1073-85) was one of the most important and controversial of medieval popes. This letter, written in 1073, defends the pope’s power against critics. It is excerpted from The Letters of Gregory VII, translated and edited by J. P. Migne, Patrologia Latina, vol.149 (Paris: 1854), pp.705-711. To all who shall see these letters greeting in the Lord. It has told us that some persons have dared to say that we do not hold the place of Peter in the church. And that we are not lords over the church, but only ministers. And that this is true not only of us but also of our predecessors who were saints.
In answer to this we say with St. Augustine: “If you could find a single bishop or priest who does not claim to be lord over the church, I will give you my cloak too”.
Fanaticism dogmatism, dark ages
And so we say with St. Jerome: “We are lords, and you are our slaves.” And also with St. Chrysostom: “We are your masters and you are our servants.” With blessed Athanasius: “The bishop is in the church and the church is in the bishop, and if anyone is not with the bishop he is not in the church.” And again with St. Ambrose: “Wherever the bishop appears, there let the people be; as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” If then it be asked how it comes about that we make such declarations concerning ourselves and our predecessors,- declarations which seem so arrogant,- we reply that they are not arrogant but true; since it is not just to deny what has been said by Christ himself and by his holy apostles and evangelists.
For Peter received from Christ both temporal power over all earthly things and also spiritual power over souls. As did his successors; so that whoever resists them resists God himself.
Epic Movies Fantasy Medieval More than the middle ages
Nor can anyone who sets himself up against them justify his conduct by appealing to Holy Scripture or to any other authority whatsoever. For Scripture itself declares expressly concerning this matter that whosoever resists a bishop resists God’s ordinance (cf. Acts 5:29). From this it follows unmistakably that whoever separates himself from communion with a bishop cannot be saved. But remains implicated in all guilt; while on the other hand every one who cleaves to a bishop with faith and love shares in his grace and merits whatever good he does.
This being so, it would be impious for anyone to doubt that all those who are separated from communion with us ipso facto fall away from ecclesiastical fellowship altogether and lose all right to Christian burial. Let no one think otherwise! For it would be too great an evil if wicked men were suffered to contaminate innocent people with their errors or crimes through contact with them; while on.Watch Movies Series Novels Shows to talk and share.
